GraceGraceGrace explore gen-age

Teresa Albor, Katharine Meynell, Lady Helena Vortex, pub. Live Art Development Agency & GraceGraceGrace, London, 2019. 104 pages, colour, hardback. £15.

An incongruous picture of three older women by a frozen canal, in their underwear and fur hats, drinking from mugs

GraceGraceGrace explore gen-age reframes Live Art practice, adopting the handy neologism gen-age, to describe the intersection of gender and age. Ever thought middle-aged ‘women’ are invisible? This book asks you to think again. It discusses the strategies of visibility, chucking marginalised status out of the patriarchal pushchair. Produced by artists’ collective GraceGraceGrace, who identify as older, this anthology cites work by people who perform rebellious gen-age identities.

Poetry of Unknown Words

Susan Johanknecht & Katharine Meynell, pub. Gefn Press, London, 2017. Edition of 20 numbered and signed copies of which 10 are for sale to public collections.

A glass display case filled with printed sheets which make up the folded pages of the book.

This work addresses connections between notation and movement, sound and text. Taking the expanded format of Poésie de Mots Inconnus (Iliadz, 1949) our collaborative project, Poetry of Unknown Words is a feminising response. As Kate Eichhorn says in The Archival Turn in Feminism the archive is not a place to recover the past but “…to engage with some of the legacies, epistimes and traumas pressing down on the present”. Our interest in the artefact, rather than the signifying text/image alone, gives us the opportunity to understand historical context through material means – choreographing movement through the folding of the page and using phonic texts that compel sounding out loud.
